Feed Cost Calculator

Estimate feed cost before it eats the lamb margin.

Use this sheep feed cost calculator to estimate total feed needed, total feed expense, cost per animal and daily cost pressure for a flock or group.

Calculate feed cost

Enter the group size, daily intake, feeding period and feed purchase unit.

This is a planning estimate. Real farm results should be compared with actual weights, feed stock movements, health costs and sale income.

How to use it

Make the feed assumption visible

Feed cost is often one of the largest controllable costs in a lamb or flock plan. The calculator helps estimate the cost before the group is fed for the full period.

Group size

Use the number of animals that will actually receive this feed, not the whole flock if only one group is fed.

Daily intake

Enter the expected daily feed per animal. If intake changes during the period, calculate separate phases.

Package price

Use the real purchase price for a bag, bale, sack or other unit and keep the unit consistent.

Planning warning

The cheapest feed is not always the lowest-cost result.

Low feed price can still produce poor margin if growth slows, health problems increase or animals need more days before sale.

Feed cost should be reviewed together with average daily gain, feed conversion, health events and sale price.

  • Check cost per animalThis shows how much feed expense each animal carries.
  • Check cost per dayThis reveals how expensive it is to keep the group longer.
  • Compare with weight gainFeed cost is only meaningful when performance is visible.

Connected records

HerdDeck connects feed cost with real animal performance.

HerdDeck Shepherd connects feed stock, weights, medical records, finance, HARSE ration planning and reports so feed decisions can be reviewed with actual flock results.
